1. History of Establishment
The Faculty of Applied Sciences has a 16-year history of formation and development. The Faculty was established in 2007 under the decision of the Rector of the University of Economics – Technology for Industries.
Currently, the Faculty consists of two departments: the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics – Chemistry, with 25 full-time lecturers, including 6 PhD holders and 19 Master’s degree holders. The Faculty is responsible for organizing and delivering courses in Mathematics, Logic, Physics, and Chemistry. Alongside teaching activities, the Faculty places strong emphasis on and actively develops scientific research and technological activities to meet practical demands and societal development trends.
2. Achievements
Since its establishment, the Faculty of Applied Sciences has achieved numerous accomplishments in teaching and scientific research, making significant contributions to the overall development of the University.
For many consecutive years, the Faculty has been recognized as an “Excellent Task-Performing Collective” and has received multiple Certificates of Merit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Annually, all lecturers of the Faculty are awarded titles such as Emulation Fighter or Advanced Laborer. Many lecturers have been honored with the title of Emulation Fighter of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Certificates of Merit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Certificates of Merit from the People’s Committee of Nam Dinh Province.
3. Scale and Capacity
The Faculty of Applied Sciences has collaborated with other units both within and outside the University to participate in national-level and ministerial-level research projects. Each year, the Faculty completes approximately 4–5 university-level scientific research projects, many of which are evaluated as excellent.
The Faculty has published more than 30 scientific papers, including many articles in prestigious international journals indexed in SCI, SCIE, and Scopus.
Annually, the Faculty organizes scientific workshops on various topics to promote professional and academic exchange among faculty members and with scientists and experts outside the University.
4. Development Orientation of the Faculty
Strengthening political and ideological education, professional ethics, and especially the professional working style of lecturers in the context of international integration.
Coordinating with the University to develop regulations on the organization and operation of the Faculty, as well as regulations for departmental operations. Creating favorable conditions and encouraging young lecturers to pursue doctoral studies and improve foreign language proficiency.
Continuously improving teaching methods and actively applying information technology achievements in teaching to enhance training quality, following a learner-centered approach.
Establishing key research groups within each department to deepen professional expertise, continuously updating new knowledge in subject content, and adjusting training programs in line with contemporary development trends.
5. Career Opportunities for Graduates of the Data Science Program
To meet the demands and development of the national and global economy in the era of digital technology, on March 2, 2022, the Rector of the University of Economics – Technology for Industries decided to launch the undergraduate Data Science program (major code: 7460108).
In the era of Industry 4.0, the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), together with the widespread application and deep integration of modern technological devices such as smartphones and tablets, have led to an explosion of big data. These digital data contain valuable information which, if properly collected, exploited, and analyzed, can bring significant benefits to business, scientific research, and forecasting natural disasters, epidemics, etc.
As a result, Data Science has become a rapidly growing field, attracting strong investment and attention from organizations, enterprises, and large corporations across various sectors such as science and technology, marketing, finance, banking, and insurance.
Although Data Scientist is a relatively new profession, it is highly sought after in the labor market both globally and in Vietnam. Harvard Business Review has called Data Science “the sexiest job of the 21st century.” In the United States, Data Science ranks first among the top 25 best jobs, ranks 16th in terms of salary, and tops the list of the 10 most in-demand occupations.
In Vietnam, under the impact of the Industry 4.0 revolution, demand for human resources with data analysis capabilities, especially big data, is rapidly increasing.
Based on its strengths in Information Technology education as well as statistics and big data analysis in science and technology fields, USTH has launched an English-taught Bachelor’s program in Data Science to meet the demand for new human resources in the Industry 4.0 era.
6. Training Program and Career Opportunities after Graduation
The Bachelor’s program in Data Science lasts 4 years with a total of 146 credits, including:
-
General education knowledge: 51 credits
-
Professional education knowledge: 95 credits
(67 credits of theory; 19 credits of practice, internship, and projects; and 9 credits for the graduation thesis)
Data Science consists of three main components:
